Why are Far Infrared Saunas So Important?
By Pertti Olavi Jalasjaa
Try as we might, it’s extremely difficult, if not impossible, for us to avoid toxins and pollutants in today’s modern environment. Whether it’s copper in our water, mercury and nickel in our seafood, formaldehyde in our wine, or arsenic, cadmium and lead in our air, contaminants seem to be all around – and inside - us. Our kidneys, livers and other bodily organs work incessantly to purge us of the poisons we absorb, but they are simply outmatched by the toxic time bombs. Overcome by the bombardment, our bodies end up storing many of the microscopic marauders while actively trying to eliminate others.
Serious health problems can develop if our bodies are forced to store too many toxins. For example, certain authoritative sources contend that too much mercury in our bodies may contribute to rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, autism and a host of other conditions. A second toxin, cadmium, has been linked to prostate cancer, angina, hypertension, high blood pressure, migraines and other major maladies. As well, many experts have drawn a connection between the toxic chemical toluene and heart attacks, liver damage, and depression. Those are just three of an alarmingly high number of toxins, heavy metals and carcinogens that have greatly concerned scientists and health professionals for several decades. Others include trichloroethylene, xylene, cyanide and benzene. In her book Detoxify or Die, Dr. Sherry Rogers calls benzene “a known cause of leukemia” and warns that “you can get a hefty jolt of it each time you gas up your car with gasoline.”
To restore our bodies to a healthier state, we must decrease our stockpiling of toxins and better process the poisons that successfully infiltrate our bodies. If we strive to actively assist the detoxifying functions of our kidneys, livers and other organs, we can lessen the burden on our body and ultimately reduce our toxic load. To help achieve these objectives, many people utilize far infrared saunas.
Far infrared sauna use can benefit a human body in several ways. For starters, the radiant heat of a far infrared sauna can induce copious perspiration, greatly benefiting detoxification. The sauna’s far infrared rays penetrate the skin and underlying tissue, increasing blood circulation and cellular activity. Toxins are then drawn away from the cells and sweated out through the skin. The false fever created by the rise in body temperature engages internal organs and stimulates the immune system. More oxygen is absorbed into the body; the heart and lungs receive a healthy workout; muscle aches and joint pains are relieved and additional benefits result.
As a detoxification method, far infrared sauna use can be quite effectual, as it properly distributes detox duties among the relevant organs, intensifying the activity of some, like the skin, and easing the burden assumed by others, like the kidneys. At least one source has claimed that taking a 30-minute far infrared sauna bath once daily for a year will eliminate most toxins and pollutants that have accumulated in the average person’s body and help their overworked kidneys and liver function more efficiently.
As contaminants like toxic chemicals, heavy metals and other poisons will likely always be part of the world in which we live, we must focus on limiting the great threat they pose to our health and well being. By embracing the therapeutic and restorative powers of the far infrared sauna, we can maximize the health benefits of detoxification and look ahead to a more promising future.
